Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) will officially launch its new Windows 7 operating system Thursday. The much anticipated replacement to Vista has finally arrived.

Unlike similar launches in the past, Microsoft has chosen to launch Windows 7 with a minimum of celebrity fanfare and buzz. This unusual low key method is as a break from the past in which the much-hyped 2007 Vista operating system was launched in tandem with a huge media & celebrity gathering that quickly turned negative as users and reviewers alike, began to complain bitterly about its inherent size and performance issues.

Windows 7's main launch event will be conducted by CEO Steve Ballmer and several other top Microsoft executives all throughout the week from New York city.

The full version of Windows 7 Professional will retail for $299, with upgrades going for $199. Windows 7 Ultimate is priced at $319, with the upgrade version at $219. The full version of Windows 7 Home Premium is priced at $199, with an upgrade from Vista or XP costing $119.

Windows 7 hits online shops like Amazon and electronics retailers, including Best Buy, beginning Thursday.
