The famous fabricators from Orange County Choppers have done it again, this time building a cutting edge, futuristic looking electrically powered chopper. Commissioned by the electrical engineering global powerhouse Siemens corporation, and unveiled at a ceremony in New York City last week, the electric chopper dubbed the "Smart Chopper", is a way for
Siemens to showcase its latest and greatest innovative and environmentally friendly technology.
The Smart chopper weighs in at 350 lbs and features a massive 11.8 inch rear tire, along with an outrageous 120-wheelbase
and 45-degree raked front end; coupled With a range of 60-miles and an estimated top speed of 100 MPH, the Smart chopper should provide
ample performance and range for most riders seeking an alternative to fossil fuels. An onboard charging unit can be plugged
into any 100-volt outlet and allows the bike to be charged in five hours. A single speed clutch-less transmission delivers the power from
a 27-hp brushless electric motor and the entire bike was outfitted using LED lighting from OSRAM Sylvania, a Siemens subsidiary.
In addition to the lighting, Siemens also provided the electric motor, charging system, power managements module and the
wind turbine fiberglass for the Teutuls's to integrate into their design.
Over the next year, the Smart Chopper will make a country wide tour to promote green technology and then will
eventually be auctioned off on late 2010, with all proceeds going to yet to be determined charity.
