Scheduled to begin construction on 2010 is the 'The Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Marine Causeway', which when completed will be the 'longest marine water spanning bridge' in the world. With a projected total length of over 24 miles , including a 13 mile bridge and two embankments totaling another 11 miles, the Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Marine Causeway will surpass the Lake Pontchartrain causeway, currently the world's longest.

The Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Marine Causeway will connect the west coast of Qatar to the east coast of Bahrain, and is expected to reduce total travel time by car from the 4.5 hours, to approximately 30 minutes. The causeway will contain an estimated traffic volume of around 10,000 to 12,000 vehicles per day when completed and will also feature a 13 meter wide railroad bridge.

The project is expected to take anywhere from 4.5 - 5 years to complete, and will cost an $3 billion. Funding will come from both Bahrain and Qatar, with both country's already having already allocated $500million each, in order to finance the beginning phases.

The majority of the causeway construction will be performed by three international companies; Houston Texas based KBR corporation, Frances's Vinci Construction and Germany's HOCHTIEF .

paulieee

Im perplexed as to why they didnt build a tunnel instead...in terms of maintenance and environmental impact, its far surpasses a bridge.
