The LIEBHERR LTM 11200-9.1 is the most powerful mobile crane ever built. This all terrain nine axle behemoth can lift an astonishing 1,200 tons or the equivalent of 620, 2010 Chevy Camaro’s or for the military buffs out there, 17 M1A2 Abrams tanks. In addition to its massive lifting capability, the LTM 11200 also has the longest telescoping boom in the world. Constructed from eight sections, the boom reaches a vertigo inducing height of 328ft using its rapid cycle automatic TELEMATIK system and tops at over 413ft with available jib extension.

The nine-axle LTM 11200-9.1 is powered by an eight-cylinder Liebherr turbo-diesel engine with an output of 500kW (680hp) at 1,900rpm and can be driven on public roads with a total weight of 108t, while the telescopic boom is carried on a separate transport vehicle. The crane portion is powered by a second six-cylinder Liebherr turbo-diesel engine with an output of 270kW (367hp) at 1,900rpm. The LTM 11200’s nine axles are equipped with hydro-pneumatic auto self leveling suspension that equalizes loads between pairs of axles. The active speed dependant rear axle steering that was developed by Liebherr, is integrated into the chassis for maximum efficiency in the control of this large vehicle when out on the roads. Fitted with the much respected German ZF automatic transmission, the gear box has 12 forward and 2 reverse gears. The wheels on the first five axles on the front are powered, while the rest trail; All wheels steer.

Liebherr’s designers are still working with the 11200 design. Currently, they are working on a giant telecrawler version of the crane, the LTR 11200 . A prototype has been built and was recently rolled out at the Liebherr factory in Ehingen, Germany.
